The Mali Empire, founded by the legendary Sundiata Keita in 1235, rose to become the wealthiest state on Earth. Under Mansa Musa in the 14th century, its gold reserves were so vast that when he passed through Cairo on pilgrimage, he gave away so much gold that he crashed the Egyptian economy for a decade. Timbuktu, its jewel, housed the University of Sankore with over 700,000 manuscripts — a center of learning that rivaled anything in the medieval world.
What about the Dogon people and the stars?
The Dogon of Mali's Bandiagara Escarpment hold one of Africa's most profound mysteries. For centuries, they knew about Sirius B — a white dwarf star invisible to the naked eye — which they call Po Tolo. They described its 50-year orbit with mathematical precision. Western science didn't discover Sirius B until the 1800s, and couldn't photograph it until 1970. Yet there it was, mapped in Dogon sacred knowledge for generations.
